An Antiguan and Barbudan educator has been shortlisted for one of the top teaching honours in the United States, earning a place among five finalists for South Carolina’s 2026 Teacher of the Year award.
Alex Wharton, a special education resource teacher at Berkeley High School, was surprised with the announcement during a visit by state and district education officials to her classroom. The recognition places her in contention for the statewide title, with the winner to be announced on April 23.
Wharton, who hails from the Grays Green community, has spent more than three decades in education. She is currently in her 34th year of teaching, including eight years in South Carolina, and has worked extensively across both the Caribbean and the United States.
Her selection as a finalist follows her designation as Berkeley County School District Teacher of the Year in 2025. She is known for her work in special education and for incorporating practical life and workforce skills into her teaching, while advocating strongly for her students.
As part of the recognition, Wharton received a US$10,000 award. The overall winner will receive US$25,000 and the use of a new BMW for one year while serving as a statewide ambassador for education.
School officials described Wharton as a dedicated educator who fosters a supportive and inclusive environment for both students and colleagues. Her approach to teaching has been credited with making a lasting impact within the school community.
An ordained minister, Wharton has also been recognised for her commitment to service beyond the classroom.
Speaking after the announcement, she described the honour as both humbling and affirming, noting the challenges and rewards of working in special education.
Wharton was joined by her family and members of the school community as the announcement was celebrated on campus.
The South Carolina Teacher of the Year programme recognises excellence in teaching and highlights educators who demonstrate leadership, innovation and a strong commitment to student success.
