The North Sound drag racing facility is set for a major upgrade following Cabinet’s approval of a new contract aimed at improving safety and enhancing the venue’s appeal as a recreational and tourism asset.

Director General for Communications Maurice Merchant said the government has entered into an agreement with a Chinese construction firm to carry out the works.

“The government of Antigua and Barbuda has entered into a contractual agreement… for the repaving of the North Sound racetrack with the primary objective of significantly improving safety at that facility,” Merchant said.

The track, located near the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, has grown in popularity and attracts large crowds for racing events and family activities.

“[It] has grown in popularity over the years, attracting thousands of racing enthusiasts and families… who utilize the venue as a key recreational space,” he said.

Officials say the upgrade will focus on resurfacing the track and installing improved safety features to better protect drivers and spectators.

“The project will include resurfacing work, and installation of enhanced safety features designed to better protect drivers and spectators alike,” Merchant said.

Work on the project could begin within weeks, pending final coordination with stakeholders in the racing community.

“Public Works… expect to see some work starting within two to three weeks… once arrangements have been made with the racing fraternity,” Merchant said.

The redevelopment is part of broader efforts to modernize key recreational infrastructure, with officials highlighting the facility’s importance to both local entertainment and potential tourism offerings.

Authorities say the improvements will bring the track closer to modern standards as its use continues to expand.
