The government has approved a series of measures aimed at preserving the centuries-old pottery tradition in Seaview Farm, while expanding opportunities for cultural tourism and youth training.

Director General for Communications Maurice Merchant said the initiative follows a proposal highlighting the cultural and economic importance of the craft.

“Cabinet approved a series of initiatives aimed at preserving the nation’s pottery in Seaview Farm while strengthening cultural tourism and supporting the sustainability of traditional pottery production,” Merchant said.

He noted that Seaview Farm is home to one of the Caribbean’s oldest surviving pottery traditions.

“Cabinet recognized Seaview Farm as the home of one of the Caribbean’s oldest surviving pottery traditions… with techniques and craftsmanship passed down through generations for more than a century,” he said.

As part of the initiative, individuals will be trained in the craft to ensure its continuation.

“Cabinet has agreed to assign three individuals… to undergo training in the traditional craft of pottery,” Merchant said.

The Ministry of Tourism will also collaborate with local artisans to integrate pottery into the country’s tourism offerings.

“The Ministry of Tourism will enter into a collaboration… for facilitating the production and supply of authentic pottery artifacts,” he said, adding that the items will be used as official gifts and part of the national tourism product.

The move is expected to provide economic support for artisans while preserving a key aspect of Antigua and Barbuda’s cultural heritage.

Officials say the initiative reflects a broader strategy to link heritage industries with tourism development, ensuring traditional crafts remain viable for future generations.
