Polling stations opened across Antigua and Barbuda at 6 a.m. on Thursday as voters began casting ballots in the country’s general election, with voting taking place in all 17 constituencies.

The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission confirmed that polling is underway nationwide. Electors have until 6 p.m. to cast their ballots, after which counting will begin.

The contest is primarily between the ruling Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) and the opposition United Progressive Party (UPP), along with a candidate from the Barbuda People’s Movement (BPM).

Three independent candidates are also on the ballot: Debbie Pero Georges in St. George, Alan Weston in St. Paul, and Nigel Bascus in St. John’s Rural West, setting up three-way races in those constituencies.

The Democratic National Alliance (DNA) is not participating in today’s election after announcing it would not field candidates.

Early activity was reported at several polling stations, with voters arriving shortly after opening. Election officials, party agents and security personnel are present across the country to ensure an orderly voting process.

In the last general election held in 2023, a total of 42,869 ballots were cast, representing a turnout of 70.37 percent, according to official results.

Authorities are urging voters to confirm their polling stations, bring the required identification, and comply with all electoral rules throughout the day.

Today’s vote will determine the composition of the next Parliament, with counting set to begin after polls close and expected to continue through the night into Friday, which is a public holiday, before final results are declared.

Teams from the Commonwealth, OAS and, Caricom are observing the elections.
