Prime Minister Gaston Browne says his administration is shifting its approach to worker pay, moving beyond minimum wage toward what he described as a livable wage.

Speaking at the joint Antigua Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU) and Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party Labour Day rally, Browne said the change is part of a broader effort to improve the standard of living for workers.

“We’re also moving from a minimum wage to a livable wage,” Browne said.

He indicated that the policy direction is tied to ongoing increases in salaries and wages, as the government seeks to ensure that workers can meet their basic needs and improve their quality of life.

Browne said the move forms part of a wider labour agenda that includes better working conditions, expanded opportunities and increased access to education and training.

At the same time, he stressed that higher wages must be supported by stronger productivity across the workforce.

“You must increase your productivity,” Browne said, noting that sustained economic progress depends on workers matching gains with performance.

The prime minister said the government remains committed to improving earnings while maintaining economic growth, pointing to what he described as continued development across key sectors.

His remarks came as Labour Day celebrations marked the 75th anniversary of the labour movement, with a focus on worker advancement and long-term economic stability.

Browne indicated that the transition to a livable wage will be a key part of the government’s efforts to ensure that growth translates into tangible benefits for workers.
