World Press Freedom Day highlights the essential role of a free, independent press in supporting human rights, development, and global security. The day also draws attention to ongoing challenges facing journalists, including censorship, misinformation, and threats to journalist safety.

This year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” underscores a growing recognition that press freedom is fundamental to peaceful and resilient societies. When journalists can report freely and accurately, they help prevent conflict, strengthen accountability, and foster informed public dialogue.

As the media landscape evolves amid disinformation and public disengagement, journalism is increasingly shifting toward solutions-oriented reporting, helping audiences better understand complex issues while highlighting paths forward.

In line with these priorities, Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) continues to promote peace journalism as a practical extension of press freedom. This approach emphasizes reporting that explores root causes of conflict, includes diverse perspectives, and highlights opportunities for resolution.

HWPL has long been promoting peace journalism through work in DC and abroad, reflecting the heart and intention of HWPL Chairman Lee Man-hee: “To attain world peace, all journalists must frequently report on peace.” Journalists are now answering this call to support the efforts being made for world peace.

HWPL convened approximately 220 journalists from around the world for its International Workshop on Peace Journalism Studies. Discussions focused on rebuilding trust in media, addressing polarization, and advancing accurate, balanced, and solutions-based reporting. The event also reflected on the need to rebuild public trust in media and ensure that journalism contributes positively to society, which are principles that align with the objectives of World Press Freedom Day.

“As we observe World Press Freedom Day, we are reminded that press freedom is inseparable from peace,” an HWPL representative stated. As global challenges intensify, World Press Freedom Day remains both a celebration and a call to action – urging continued support for press freedom and responsible journalism that advances human dignity and lasting peace.
