Shenella Govia returns as Government Senator, Minister of State and Majority Leader

The government on Friday signaled its intended leadership team for the Upper House during the swearing-in ceremony for newly appointed senators at Government House.

During the proceedings, the master of ceremonies announced that Senator Alincia Williams-Grant is expected to be nominated as President of the Senate when the Upper House convenes on May 20.

Philip Shoul is also expected to be nominated as Deputy President of the Senate.

The announcements came as 10 government senators were formally sworn in following the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s victory in the April 30 general election.

Later in the ceremony, officials also confirmed that Senator Shenella Govia will assume the role of Leader of Government Business in the Senate.

Govia was additionally sworn in as Minister of State within the Ministry of Housing and Works.

The ceremony at Government House included the administration of the oath of allegiance, oath of office and oath of secrecy to the senators before Governor General Rodney Williams formally presented instruments of appointment.

Officials also reminded attendees that the Lower House of Parliament is scheduled to meet on May 18 to elect a Speaker and Deputy Speaker, while the Senate is expected to convene on May 20 to formally elect its President and Deputy President.
