Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the government plans to transform Barbuda into a fully renewable-powered “smart island” as part of a broader strategy to position the island as a high-end luxury and technology-driven destination.

Speaking on Pointe FM on Saturday, Browne said the government intends to expand Barbuda’s solar energy capacity so the island can eventually operate around the clock using renewable energy alone.

“We plan to make the renewable energy plant totally green to power Barbuda,” Browne said.

The Prime Minister said the government hopes to install between two and three megawatts of solar energy generation along with battery storage systems to eliminate the island’s dependence on fossil fuels.

“We are seeking to get about two megawatts, maybe three megawatts of green energy,” Browne said.

According to Browne, Barbuda currently receives approximately 12 hours of renewable-powered electricity daily, but the government wants to expand that to full 24-hour coverage.

“We want to get now to 24 hours,” Browne said. “So Barbuda is going to be a green organic [island].”

The Prime Minister said the renewable energy transition forms part of a wider development vision that includes modern infrastructure, technology integration and luxury tourism expansion.

“Our plan is to make Barbuda a smart island, a luxury destination,” Browne said.

He added that the government wants Barbuda to become a technologically advanced destination capable of attracting wealthy homeowners and investors from North America and Europe.

“When it comes to AI and so on, eventually we want to make sure that Barbuda is at the cutting edge of our technology,” Browne said.

Browne said the long-term goal is to differentiate Barbuda from other tourism destinations in the region by combining luxury development with sustainability and advanced technology infrastructure.

“Barbuda will have some of the wealthiest people in North America and Europe having homes in Barbuda,” Browne said.
