A set of steps that blocked part of the sidewalk on Popeshead Street has been demolished, allowing pedestrians to use the walkway without stepping into traffic.
Urban Renewal Minister Rawdon Turner posted a video of the demolition on social media, saying the obstruction had created difficulties for people walking along the busy street.
“If you’ve ever walked along Popeshead Street, you know exactly what I’m talking about,” Turner said.
He said pedestrians travelling through the area, including those heading into St. John’s or nearby businesses, had often been forced to leave the sidewalk and enter the roadway because of the obstruction.
“Not anymore,” Turner said after the steps were removed.
The demolition is intended to improve pedestrian access and safety along the street. Turner described the work as an example of achieving practical results through small but meaningful improvements.
