Nigerian airline Air Peace says it has safely evacuated 262 Nigerian nationals from South Africa following a wave of xenophobic attacks that targeted foreign nationals in parts of the country.

The airline, working in partnership with the Federal Government of Nigeria, transported the evacuees to Lagos, where they were welcomed by government officials and representatives of relevant agencies.

According to Air Peace, the operation was carried out as part of a humanitarian effort to assist Nigerians who sought to return home amid concerns for their safety.

The arrival of the returnees was marked by expressions of gratitude from passengers and a coordinated response from government agencies tasked with providing support and assistance.

Air Peace said the mission demonstrated the importance of collaboration between public and private sector partners in responding to emergencies affecting Nigerian citizens abroad.

The evacuation followed reports of violence and unrest directed at foreign nationals in South Africa, prompting concerns among affected communities and calls for assistance from those seeking to leave the country.

The airline described the operation as part of its commitment to supporting humanitarian causes and assisting Nigerians in times of crisis.
