Prime Minister Gaston Browne has officially been granted the lifetime style of “The Right Honourable” under new national rules governing the use of honorific titles and official appellations in Antigua and Barbuda.

The new framework was established through a Vice-Regal Warrant issued by Governor-General Sir Rodney Williams on December 10, 2025, acting under the authority of the Constitution and with the countersignature of the Prime Minister.

The warrant creates formal rules governing the granting and use of official styles and titles, with the stated aim of ensuring consistency, dignity, and clarity in recognizing constitutional office holders and distinguished individuals.

Under the new rules, the style “The Right Honourable” is granted for life to Governors-General, former Governors-General, Prime Ministers upon the commencement of their fourth term in office, former Prime Ministers who have served at least four terms, and members of His Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council.

The warrant also authorizes the Governor-General, acting under warrant and with the Prime Minister’s countersignature, to confer the title on former Prime Ministers and other distinguished individuals considered deserving of the honour.

The style “The Honourable” will continue to be used by members of the Senate and House of Representatives while they hold office. The Governor-General may also authorize former office holders or other distinguished persons to retain the title for life through a special warrant.

Additionally, recipients of the Order of the Caribbean Community (OCC) are entitled to use the style “The Honourable.”

The title “Excellency” is reserved exclusively for the Governor-General, the Governor-General’s spouse, and Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassadors and high commissioners, and may only be used while those individuals remain in office.

The warrant further provides that the Governor-General and future office holders may amend, interpret, expand, or revoke the rules through a subsequent warrant issued under the Governor-General’s hand and seal and countersigned by the Prime Minister.

According to the warrant, the new framework codifies national protocol for official styles and appellations, aligning Antigua and Barbuda’s system with established Commonwealth practices while reflecting the country’s constitutional and national traditions.
