The Antigua and Barbuda Hotels and Tourism Association is paying tribute to Hans Smit, founder and designer of The Goldsmitty, following his death.

Smit established the handmade jewellery store at Redcliffe Quay in 1981. A gifted craftsman and avid gemstone seeker, he travelled extensively to source precious stones, which he transformed into distinctive, one-of-a-kind pieces.

One of his most significant discoveries occurred while hiking in Antigua, when he found an unusual stone later confirmed to be petrified coral more than 30 million years old. The discovery led to the creation of Antiguanite, which became an exclusive trademark of The Goldsmitty.

The ABHTA remembered Smit as a visionary, nature lover and humanitarian who had a deep affection for Antigua and its people.

The association extended condolences to his family, friends and others whose lives he touched.

“May his legacy continue to shine as brilliantly as the treasures he created,” the ABHTA said.
