Police have been instructed to intensify enforcement against heavily tinted vehicles as part of the government’s response to crime and gun violence in Antigua and Barbuda.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said the tint must be removed from vehicles where it prevents law enforcement officers from seeing the occupants and activities inside.

“Those criminal elements who have tinted the vehicles, we have instructed the police to take them off,” Browne said during the Browne and Browne Show. “We must see what’s inside of those vehicles.”

The directive follows a recent meeting of the National Security Council, during which officials reviewed crime trends, the circulation of illegal firearms and the performance of the country’s law-enforcement agencies.

Browne also called for police to conduct stop-and-search operations regularly, suggesting that the exercises take place at least twice weekly.

The prime minister said the government plans to strengthen the police force’s operational capacity by providing additional vehicles, drones and other resources.

Browne did not disclose further details about the strategies developed by the National Security Council, citing the sensitive nature of law-enforcement operations.
