PM Browne Backs 24/7 Firearms for Police Officers
— Prime Minister Gaston Browne says police officers should be permitted to carry firearms around the clock, arguing that officers can become targets of criminals after completing their shifts.
Browne said the current system requires some officers to return their firearms to the police station when they go off duty, potentially leaving them vulnerable after arresting suspects.
“So just imagine you apprehend a criminal today, tomorrow he’s out on bail. And then you turn in your firearm after your shift,” Browne said.
He said officers may also encounter crimes while off duty but could be reluctant to intervene because they are unarmed.
Browne argued that every police officer, not only members of the Special Services Unit, should generally be equipped with a firearm 24 hours a day unless an individual officer is considered unsuitable to carry one.
“They should be equipped 24-7 with a firearm,” Browne said, adding that the matter has been discussed by the Cabinet.
The prime minister said officers authorized to carry firearms must receive proper training in their operation, use and secure storage.
