Bus operators in Antigua and Barbuda are pressing for higher fares, saying rising fuel, maintenance, insurance and vehicle costs have made it increasingly difficult to remain profitable.
Former Antigua and Barbuda Bus Association president Glenn Miller said drivers are seeking an increase of between 50 and 75 cents on fares across all routes.
Miller said the price of buses has risen sharply. A vehicle that cost about $80,000 in 2014 can now cost around $190,000, while other operating expenses have also increased.
He said discussions on a fare adjustment have been taking place for about two years with Transport Board manager Hubert Jarvis and Tourism Minister Charles “Max” Fernandez, but no agreement has been reached.
Miller, who operates the St John’s to Jolly Harbour route, said fares currently range from $2.25 to $3.75. He said a fully loaded trip can generate only about $42 before fuel and other expenses are deducted.
Drivers at both the West and East bus stations said fares have remained largely unchanged for more than 20 years despite higher costs for spare parts, insurance and maintenance.
They also cited the withdrawal of a fuel subsidy introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic as an additional financial burden.
Operators at the West Bus Station raised separate concerns about the condition of the terminal, including inadequate shelter, bathroom facilities and areas for drivers to rest or clean their vehicles. They also questioned how the $5 daily entrance fee paid by buses is being used.
Miller said about 140 buses use the West Bus Station each day.
East Bus Station operators also complained about working from an open lot without a covered terminal.
The drivers say a fare adjustment is now necessary to keep public transport operations viable as costs continue to rise.
Attempts to reach Transport Board manager Hubert Jarvis for comment were unsuccessful.
