APUA is set to undertake a major modernisation of its telecommunications network after Cabinet approved a three-year investment programme worth about US$7 million.

The project is aimed at replacing and strengthening ageing technology across the Authority’s telecommunications system, some of which is expected to lose manufacturer support in 2027.

The first phase is projected to cost around US$4 million and will focus on key components of the network, including the Central Office, mobile switching system, remote facilities and core infrastructure.

APUA also plans to improve the Central Office’s cooling and environmental systems to safeguard telecommunications equipment and support more reliable operations.

The Authority expects the investment to increase network capacity and coverage while reducing reliability issues and improving the quality of services available to customers.

Cabinet has authorised APUA to make the necessary arrangements to move the programme forward, with the government describing modern and dependable telecommunications infrastructure as essential to the country’s development.
