Chet Greene Pays Tribute to Pasqual ‘Purple’ Peters

St. Paul MP E.P. Chet Greene has paid tribute to Pasqual “Purple” Peters, remembering the late Liberta resident as a beloved community figure, skilled tradesman and devoted supporter of his village.

In a tribute following Peters’ death, Greene described him as “a friend, a father, a brother and a husband” who was well known and loved throughout Liberta.

Greene recalled knowing Peters from their days at Ball Beef School, where Peters and Denver Osborne regularly drew the attention of Mr. Hampson during morning assemblies.

“Almost every morning, without fail, Mr. Hampson’s voice would ring out: ‘Pasqual Peters and Denver Osborne please pay attention!’” Greene recalled.

Peters later spent time in the United States before returning to Antigua and Barbuda and settling back into life in Liberta. According to Greene, he became a popular figure in the dockyard and took considerable pride in his work as a painter, varnisher and finisher.

Greene also remembered Peters as a committed Libertian who regularly supported community sports and other activities.

“He was no easy pushover but no big fighter. His mouth was enough to cower any aggressor into fear,” Greene wrote, recalling Peters’ colorful personality and stories about his years in New York.

Greene said Peters could be among the “kindest and most adorable” people in the community, while acknowledging the different sides of his personality.

“That was Purple; complex, real and utterly himself,” he said.

Peters was also deeply interested in politics and shared a close relationship with Greene.

“‘Missa Greene, me hab you back,’ he would say,” Greene recalled.

As Peters’ health declined, Greene said the roles were reversed and he made it his duty to look out for him.

The MP thanked members of his staff and the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s St. Paul’s Branch for helping to care for Peters, describing their efforts as a “labor of love.”

Greene extended condolences to Peters’ immediate and extended family on behalf of the wider community.

“Sleep in peace, brother. Sleep in peace, comrade,” Greene concluded.
