The United Progressive Party has paid tribute to former Assistant General Secretary Ernest Benjamin, remembering him as a meticulous administrator, accomplished public servant and passionate advocate for good governance.

The party extended condolences to his loved ones, including Terry Ann and Vaughn, and the wider family.

Benjamin served the UPP in several capacities and became particularly respected for the detailed minutes he prepared during executive meetings. On one occasion, he reportedly produced 20 typed pages of minutes from a regular meeting.

The UPP said his commitment to order, structure and constitutional principles reflected his extensive career in the public service. Benjamin rose to the rank of permanent secretary and served in the Ministry of Economic Development under then Deputy Prime Minister Lester Bird.

According to the tribute, the St. John’s Development Corporation was established while Benjamin served as permanent secretary.

A longtime resident of St. John’s, he also served for several years as secretary of the UPP’s St. John’s City South Branch. He supported the establishment of a mayor and city council to oversee the development of the capital.

Benjamin was further remembered as a West Indian nationalist who devoted considerable attention to good governance and electoral fairness. He worked with the Free and Fair Election League and, despite declining health, co-hosted a weekly Progressive FM programme focused on educating the public.

“The UPP takes this opportunity to reaffirm its appreciation for the sterling, selfless contributions of Brother Ernest Benjamin,” the party said.

Concluding its tribute with a reference to Benjamin’s legendary record-keeping, the UPP said it was certain that “when the next assembly of angels is called up yonder, Ernest will be called upon to take the minutes.”

“Farewell, Ernest, our esteemed brother. Rest in peace until we meet again.”
