The Central Board of Health is warning residents against pouring used oil down drains, saying the illegal practice can damage drainage systems, contribute to flooding and harm the environment.

According to the agency, used oil can cause severe blockages in drains, preventing water from flowing freely during periods of heavy rainfall. This can increase the risk of flash flooding in communities.

The CBH said the improper disposal of oil can also attract rats and roaches, creating additional public health concerns for residents and businesses.

Oil poured into drains may eventually reach surrounding waters, where it can pollute the marine environment and threaten fish and other marine life.

Residents are being encouraged to store used oil in properly sealed containers until it can be safely disposed of.

The agency reminded the public that illegal dumping carries a fine of up to EC$5,000 and urged everyone to help keep Antigua’s communities, streets and waterways clean and safe.
