Justice Now says a change in leadership at His Majesty’s Prison has not addressed families’ concerns about inmate deaths and the treatment of vulnerable prisoners.

The pressure group says the appointment of Acting Superintendent Jermaine Anthony does not resolve what it describes as longstanding problems within the prison system.

Justice Now spokesperson Khalid Shabazz told Observer AM that the leadership change provides little reassurance to his family, following his son’s death in custody.

Colonel Trevor Pennyfeather recently went on pre-retirement leave amid increased scrutiny of prison conditions, with Anthony assuming the superintendent’s duties.

Justice Now is calling for broader reforms, including improved care for inmates with mental health conditions. The group says some prisoners who require psychiatric treatment are being held in prison rather than receiving care at Clarevue Psychiatric Hospital.

The group is also calling for the resignation of Attorney General Sir Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin and says greater accountability is needed for deaths in custody.

A formal coroner’s inquest into the inmate’s death has not yet begun.

Justice Now plans to stage a peaceful protest outside Police Headquarters on American Road on 24 September. The demonstration is scheduled to begin at 4pm and will focus on calls for justice, accountability and prison reform.
