— Drivers who refuse a police instruction to remove illegal window tint could have their vehicles impounded for at least two weeks, Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said at the post-Cabinet news conference.

Merchant said Cabinet had reiterated its instruction to police to intensify enforcement against illegally tinted vehicles. If police determine that a vehicle’s tint does not comply with the law, they can ask the driver to remove it, he said.

Drivers who refuse to comply risk having their vehicles taken to the government motor pool for assessment and removal of the illegal tint. Merchant said the process is estimated to take a minimum of two weeks, leaving affected motorists without their vehicles during that period.

“Individuals will be out of their vehicles for not complying for a minimum of two weeks,” Merchant said.

He urged motorists to check that their vehicles meet the legal requirements and to remove illegal tint voluntarily.

The renewed directive came during Cabinet’s discussions with senior police officials on gun violence and law enforcement. Merchant said Cabinet called for more consistent and visible enforcement, including action against offenses and acts of lawlessness beyond serious and violent crime.

Merchant did not specify the legal tint limit or say when the intensified enforcement would begin.
