This International Day of the Girl Child, EcoShores Sustainable Futures Network (ESFN) is reaffirming its commitment to empowering girls through education, environmental stewardship, financial security, disaster resilience, creative expression, and meaningful opportunities to lead.

Under the theme of possibility and empowerment, ESFN recognises that protecting girls requires safeguarding their well-being and building communities where girls have equitable access. This access includes knowledge, resources, relationships, and opportunities necessary to shape their own futures.

“Our girls deserve the opportunity to build lives that are chosen by them, and fulfilling. We must create environments where girls can explore their interests, develop their skills, express their lived realities, and pursue their ambitions without being limited by society’s expectations,” said Britney McDonald, Portfolio Manager of ESFN.

Investing in girls means investing in resilient communities

ESFN’s work has connected over 165 girls with the broader goals of sustainable development. Through environmental education, agriculture, food security, financial literacy, and disaster resilience, the organisation supports the development of skills that can strengthen individual well-being while contributing to more resilient households and communities.

As climate change, economic uncertainty, and disaster risks continue to affect communities, ensuring that girls have access to relevant knowledge and practical opportunities is essential. Girls must be included in conversations and initiatives that shape their environment, livelihoods, and future economic participation. Through supportive partnerships such as CIBC Caribbean for its internship programme, ESFN has been able to continue its mission of equity building.

ESFN believes that resilience is the ability to recover from adversity. It is the ability to access opportunities, exercise agency, make informed decisions, and participate meaningfully in shaping the conditions in which one lives.

    Girls belong in every field

A central component of ESFN’s commitment is advancing opportunities for women and girls in STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.

Underrepresentation in key fields can limit whose experiences inform research, innovation, policy, and the solutions that communities develop. Supporting girls to explore these disciplines helps broaden their understanding of what is possible while encouraging the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers, creatives and artists, mathematicians, and innovators.

ESFN recognises the importance of creativity and freedom of expression. Girls must have opportunities to become the journalists of the future, the shapers of culture, the storytellers of their communities, and the leaders who influence public conversations.

Their voices should not simply be heard when decisions have already been made. They should help shape those decisions from the beginning.

Creating spaces for learning, leadership and expression

Through internships, volunteering opportunities, individual engagement, creative activities, and partnerships, ESFN seeks to create meaningful pathways for girls to discover their interests, build confidence, and develop practical skills.

The organisation values collaboration with groups such as the Antigua and Barbuda Girl Guides Association and Antigua Girls High School, recognising the importance of working alongside institutions that support girls’ development, leadership, and community participation.

As activities and conversations build towards the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026 and the Commonwealth People’s Forum, ESFN continues to create opportunities for young people to engage with culture, creativity, climate action, and community development.

For ESFN, these efforts are part of ongoing work rather than a response to a single event. Meaningful empowerment requires sustained engagement, safe spaces for expression, accessible learning opportunities, and structures that recognise the different experiences and aspirations of girls.

    A future without boundaries

Our approach is grounded in the belief that girls should be able to imagine futures beyond the limitations traditionally imposed on them. Whether they aspire to become environmental scientists, entrepreneurs, agricultural innovators, engineers, journalists, artists, or community leaders, they deserve the support and opportunities to explore those possibilities.

The organisation calls on families, schools, community organisations, businesses, civil society, and regional and international partners to invest in girls’ development and ensure that their participation remains central to sustainable development.

From local communities in Antigua and Barbuda to regional and international partnerships, ESFN remains committed to building connections that advance equity, resilience, creativity, and opportunity. From shore to shore, we have community.
