Nearly 300 additional security personnel from regional and international partners, including Canada, are expected in Antigua and Barbuda to support security operations for the November 1–4 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said Friday that the visiting forces would also bring equipment to assist in protecting heads of government, official delegations and other dignitaries attending the gathering.
“Close to 300 additional security forces will be on Antigua, particularly for this event,” Merchant said during the post-Cabinet media briefing.
“Not only the forces, but they will be bringing equipment with them to aid in providing the highest level of security for dignitaries who will be here for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting.”
Merchant identified Canada and countries within CARICOM among the partners supporting Antigua and Barbuda’s security preparations. He did not provide a country-by-country breakdown of personnel or specify the equipment being brought.
The announcement followed a briefing to Cabinet on Wednesday by senior police officials on the country’s readiness for the summit.
Merchant said the discussions covered coordination among participating agencies, personnel readiness and the resources needed to secure the event. Preparations were advancing, with agencies working together to fulfil their responsibilities, he said.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne and Cabinet members reviewed the overall state of readiness and emphasised the need to provide security agencies with adequate resources and administrative support.
Merchant said Browne reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that the agencies could carry out their duties effectively and professionally.
The security operation is intended to provide a safe environment for visiting leaders, delegates, invited guests and members of the public during Antigua and Barbuda’s hosting of the Commonwealth gathering.
