Prime Minister Gaston Browne has urged against reprisals following the fatal shooting of two people he identified as members of the Rastafari community in Antigua and Barbuda.

Browne said he learned of the killings while travelling from Singapore to London and extended condolences to Ras Selah, whose daughter was reportedly among the victims.

“Selah, we know it’s very difficult for you to be predeceased by a child, however, please remain strong and don’t be influenced into any reprisal,” Browne said.

He also expressed solidarity with Selah and the Niabinghi family.

Police confirmed that a 49-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman, both Creek Side residents, were killed Tuesday afternoon.

According to preliminary reports, armed occupants of a silver Honda CR-V opened fire outside a shop, striking both victims multiple times. They were taken to hospital and pronounced dead.

Police are appealing for information as investigations continue.
