Final-year students at the Antigua & Barbuda College of Advanced Studies (ABCAS) received a lesson in workplace rights this week as the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union continued its effort to prepare young people for employment.

The session, led by ABWU President Kem Riley, focused on Section C of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Code and covered issues including employment documents, working hours, overtime and premium pay, sick leave, and the right to unionise.

The presentation targeted students preparing to begin internships as part of their course requirements and encouraged discussion on workplace expectations and employee protections.

Riley described the initiative as an important part of the union’s outreach to young workers, noting that many enter the workforce without a clear understanding of their legal rights.

“We have been conducting this session for a few years, and we consider it a core part of the ABWU’s mandate to educate young workers,” Riley said. “It is through this type of education that we are able to defend and expand workers’ rights and benefits.”

Students also welcomed the session, with several describing it as practical and informative.

“I think we have been able to gather a wealth of knowledge in a short space of time,” one Public Administration student said.

Another student said the presentation provided a clearer understanding of unions and workplace advocacy.

“I now have a better understanding of what it means to be part of a union and how to stand up for my rights,” the student said.

The union extended best wishes to the students as they prepare for internships and graduation.
