The legal community came together on Friday to honour the life and legacy of renowned attorney Dane Raymond Hamilton K.C. during a service of thanksgiving at the Ebenezer Methodist Church.

Family, friends, and members of the judiciary gathered to pay tribute to the distinguished lawyer, who passed away in December 2024, just a month after his 73rd birthday.

Hamilton, originally from St. Vincent, was renowned for his commanding courtroom presence and sharp cross-examination skills. Beyond his legal expertise, he was celebrated for his loyalty to friends and colleagues.

His contributions extended across the region, with a strong litigation practice in both commercial and criminal law. Notably, he represented the Antigua Power Company and was recognized as one of the first University of the West Indies graduates to make a significant impact in the field of criminal law.

Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin has called for a lasting tribute to honour Hamilton’s legacy. He was not only a respected attorney but also served with distinction as a judge in the Court of Appeal.

Among those mourning his passing is his son, Dane Hamilton Jr., a magistrate in the Lower Court. Former prime minister Baldwin Spencer, Opposition senator Pearl Quinn Williams and several attorneys within the Bar Association also in attendance. Prior to the service, Hamilton was laid to rest in a private burial attended by close family.

In recognition of his immense contributions to the legal profession, the High Court will hold a special sitting on Monday, February 3, at 9 a.m. to commemorate his memory. Court proceedings will be suspended to allow members of the judiciary to pay their respects.
