_St. John’s, Antigua – May 19, 2025_ — The Wadadli Initiative for Self-care and Healing (WISH), Mental Fitness Center, and Antigua and Barbuda Holistic Coalition (ABHC) jointly commend the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Liberta for launching its Mental Health Ministry under the theme “An Ounce of Prevention.” This faith-based initiative represents a significant step forward in our national conversation about mental wellbeing.

At Saturday’s launch event, His Excellency Sir Clare Roberts, KCN, KC, Governor General’s Deputy, delivered powerful remarks on behalf of Their Excellencies Sir Rodney and Lady Sandra Williams, calling for urgent passage of the new Mental Health Care Bill. This progressive legislation, drafted with support from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), would replace the antiquated 1957 Mental Treatment Act.

As panelists at the event, representatives from WISH and Mental Fitness Center emphasized that legislative reform must be accompanied by comprehensive system upgrades. They stressed the need for care that is person-centered, trauma-informed, and equitable – ensuring dignity and proper treatment for all individuals facing mental health challenges.

Tia Philip of ABHC stated: “The decision to update our mental health laws is crucial and long overdue. As we move toward early intervention and reduced stigma, we must continue dialogue between health authorities, professionals, and those with lived experience to create truly effective reform.”

Jamion Knight, Founder of Mental Fitness Center, noted: “The Church’s initiative shows how faith communities can significantly improve our nation’s mental fitness. By collaborating across sectors, we can help Antiguans and Barbudans overcome challenges like childhood trauma and depression.”

Chaneil Imhoff, Founder of WISH, added: “We welcome legislative reform but emphasize that the new Bill must place patients at its core. We need a system that meets people where they are, protects their dignity, and adapts to our growing population’s needs.”

The proposed Bill includes vital protections such as a clear criteria for diagnosis and treatment, legal safeguards for dignity and consent, improved procedures for crisis care and stronger community support systems.

As Antigua and Barbuda prepares for national consultations on the Bill, the coalition calls on the Government to ensure inclusive engagement – particularly centering voices of individuals with lived mental health experience, their families and support networks, Mental health professionals and advocate and Civil Society Organizations.

This is our moment to build a mental health system worthy of our people – one that combines compassionate care with modern medical standards. The coalition stands ready to support this crucial national effort.
