Antigua and Barbuda’s long-awaited National Swimming Centre remains on hold due to unresolved funding and design issues, according to Minister of Sports Daryll Matthew.
Speaking during an interview on ABS television, Mr Matthew said the project had encountered delays stemming from challenges with both the availability of funds and the finalisation of technical designs.
“There was a delay in funding and some design issues that needed to be resolved,” the minister explained, responding to questions on why construction on the state-of-the-art facility has not yet resumed.
While the government has reiterated its commitment to completing the swimming centre, Mr Matthew noted that the project must proceed in phases, ensuring that infrastructure is built to international standards and within budget.
The centre is expected to provide a modern venue for aquatic sports and support the development of young athletes across Antigua and Barbuda. It was first announced as part of a broader push to enhance national sports infrastructure.
Mr Matthew said updates on the revised timeline for the facility’s completion would be provided once the outstanding issues are fully addressed.
