Every year on June 5, millions around the world unite to celebrate World Environment Day—a day dedicated to raising awareness and taking action for the environment. In 2025, the theme is “Ending Plastic Pollution,” with global celebrations hosted by the Republic of Korea. The campaign, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), urges individuals, communities, and governments to reduce plastic waste and protect ecosystems.

Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental challenges. Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic end up in oceans, harming marine life, entering the food chain, and even being found in human bodies. But there’s hope, solutions such as banning single-use plastics, promoting sustainable packaging, and improving recycling are already making a difference.

Antigua and Barbuda is a shining example in the Caribbean. As early as 2016, the country became the first in the region to ban plastic shopping bags, styrofoam containers, and straws. This bold move has positioned the twin-island nation as a leader in environmental protection.

Want to get involved? Start a recycled art project or share tips on social media using the hashtag #BeatPlasticPollution.

World Environment Day reminds us that no action is too small. Whether you’re on the shores of Antigua and Barbuda or anywhere else in the world, you can make a difference. Together, we can reduce plastic pollution and protect our planet for generations to come.
