Director of Education Clare Browne says the Ministry was blindsided by the sudden closure of St. Andrews Primary School, with no prior notice from school officials. Teachers and parents were similarly shocked when Principal Andrea Walter informed staff on Friday that the school would shut down immediately.
Browne criticised the lack of communication, revealing that Education Officer Emil Michael only learned of the closure through a phone call from Walter that same day. The decision has stirred confusion and frustration, with some linking it to unresolved wage disputes and union activity.
Browne acknowledged the school’s financial struggles, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, and praised management’s efforts to stay afloat. He said Walter and Michael are set to meet Tuesday to discuss the issue further.
The Ministry is now considering ways to integrate the school into the public system to preserve its legacy and serve the affected community.
