V.C. Bird International Airport will remain open during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, with police directing travellers through revised traffic arrangements around the airport and nearby meeting venues.
Speaking at Wednesday’s public town hall, Superintendent Elson Quammie said checkpoints would help manage traffic rather than prevent passengers from reaching the terminal.
“At the traffic control point, police would not tell you can’t go to the airport,” Quammie said. “Police will be there to give direction, give assistance, and let everything run smooth.”
He outlined plans for seven traffic control points in the airport area, with restrictions focused around the Coolidge Cricket Ground, where the Commonwealth Business Forum will be held.
Access arrangements will include using the airport’s usual exit for entry, with traffic cones and signs marking separate inbound and outbound lanes. Motorists should follow officers’ directions and the temporary signs.
Quammie said traffic arrangements had been tested during preparatory exercises, allowing airport access to continue while security measures were in place nearby.
Separately, he urged motorists to avoid Jabberwock Main Road around the American University of Antigua, another major CHOGM venue. He identified alternative routes through Royal Gardens, Hodges Bay and adjacent communities.
Airport representative Joseph Samuel said normal airport operations would continue while delegations and other VIPs arrived, with agencies coordinating how to manage the available space.
Police also urged drivers to pull safely to the left and stop when approaching convoys require passage.
Antigua and Barbuda will host CHOGM from November 1 to 4. Travellers should allow extra time for their journeys and follow temporary traffic instructions.
