Defence attorney Andrew O’Kola has called on Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Clement Joseph to issue a public apology following a verbal confrontation at the High Court last Friday.

O’Kola said he was “publicly and unjustifiably verbally attacked” by the DPP in front of court staff, media personnel and members of the public.

The altercation reportedly occurred as O’Kola passed through the hallway where Joseph was seated. According to O’Kola, the DPP criticised a letter he had written, telling him he was “doing too much” before launching into a loud tirade.

“It is deeply regrettable that this incident happened in a public space,” O’Kola said in a statement, adding that such behaviour undermines public confidence in the justice system.

He stressed his duty to “fearlessly represent” clients while upholding professional integrity and called for mutual respect within the administration of justice.

O’Kola said the DPP’s conduct warranted a public apology but reaffirmed his commitment to the rule of law and independent legal advocacy.
