Police in St Elizabeth have found the bodies of at least two people in Black River following the passage of Hurricane Melissa, which battered Jamaica on Tuesday.

Superintendent Coleridge Minto, head of the St Elizabeth Police Division, said officers were at the scene investigating. The victims have not yet been identified.

The Category 5 storm made landfall on Jamaica’s southern coast, bringing destructive winds, torrential rain and severe flooding. St Elizabeth was among the hardest-hit parishes, with many areas still cut off by fallen trees, downed power lines and blocked roads.

Emergency crews are working to reach isolated communities and assess the damage.
