The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has approved a national eco-regeneration initiative targeting the Christian Valley watershed and other priority areas, linking environmental restoration with water security and eco-tourism development.

Director General of Communications in the Prime Minister’s Office Maurice Merchant said Cabinet considered and approved a comprehensive proposal presented by agriculture officials aimed at restoring degraded landscapes and strengthening climate resilience.

“Cabinet considered a comprehensive proposal by the Director of Agriculture, and this is aimed at advancing national eco-regeneration, deforestation and climate resilience efforts within Christian Valley and other priority watershed areas identified,” Merchant said during the weekly Cabinet briefing.

Merchant said the initiative is designed to address multiple national priorities, including water security, environmental protection and sustainable economic activity.

“Presented by the ministry, [the proposal] outlined an integrated program designed to strengthen water security, restore degraded landscapes, expand ecotourism opportunities and create sustainable employment,” he said.

Cabinet was also told that reforestation will be a key component of the programme, with long-term benefits beyond Christian Valley.

“There will be some reforestation, and the production of seedlings for additional distribution to other areas in Antigua,” Merchant said.

He said the initiative is expected to generate new nature reserves and enhance the country’s eco-tourism offering, while supporting broader climate and development objectives.

“It is also expected to generate nature reserves and also to provide additional tourist attractions for those who are interested in visiting nature parks,” Merchant said.

Further details on implementation timelines and project scope are expected to be outlined in Cabinet’s official briefing notes as the programme moves forward.
