Former United Progressive Party (UPP) political leader Harold Lovell is calling for a renewed focus on grassroots engagement, sharper messaging and stronger party organization following the St. Philip’s North by-election.

Speaking after the March 16 vote, Lovell said the party must intensify its presence across constituencies and ensure consistent engagement with voters.

“It is now time for really everybody to batten down the hatch, get on board, and make sure that there is activity in the constituency and that we continue to engage the constituents all over Antigua and Barbuda,” Lovell said.

He said the party must also refine how it communicates its message to the public.

“I think the UPP has a very good message. We need to sharpen it, we need to refine it, and define it more clearly… and bring that compelling narrative to the people,” Lovell said.

Lovell noted that improving the party’s appeal will require a coordinated effort across the organization.

“That has to be a collective effort… within the ranks of the organization,” he said, adding that the goal is to position the party to effectively contest any upcoming election.

He also emphasized the need to strengthen the party’s political machinery, particularly at the branch level, to improve outreach and readiness.

“Strengthen our political machine… especially our branches,” Lovell said, pointing to the importance of building support in constituencies across the country.

Framing the by-election as an opportunity for growth, Lovell said the party must learn from the experience and rebuild.

“You win some and you learn from some. This is one that we learn from,” he said.

He added that the focus now is on building a stronger, island-wide political infrastructure capable of responding quickly when elections are called.
