The government is moving to supply subsidised cement blocks to the public as part of its expanding housing programme, with production now underway at a state-backed block-making facility.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said the plant is already operational, with Cabinet discussing the rollout of sales to residents.

“It was discussed and production has started,” Merchant said during Thursday’s post-Cabinet briefing.

He said the government is finalising how the blocks will be distributed and sold, with further details expected to be announced by Housing Minister Rawdon Turner in the coming days.

“The modalities are being worked out as to how these blocks will be sold to members of the public,” Merchant said.

The initiative is aimed at lowering construction costs and improving access to essential building materials, particularly as demand for housing support increases.

Officials say the move is part of a broader strategy to address supply constraints in the construction sector while making homebuilding more affordable for residents.

The subsidised blocks are expected to support both government housing projects and private construction, as the administration of Prime Minister Gaston Browne continues efforts to strengthen the country’s housing stock.
