Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission, Arthur G.B. Thomas, has called on citizens to exercise their democratic right as polls remain open across Antigua and Barbuda.

In a message issued on Thursday morning, Thomas reminded voters that election day represents a key moment for national decision-making and encouraged full participation.

“Today is the day that you exercise your voice… through democratic choice,” he said.

He noted that polling stations opened at 6 a.m. and will close at 6 p.m., urging electors to make their way to the polls before the deadline.

“Come out and play your part in shaping the future of your country,” Thomas said.

The ABEC chairman also reiterated the requirement for voters to present a valid voter identification card in order to cast a ballot.

“Remember, you must have your voter’s identification card in order to vote,” he said.

Thomas praised the Electoral Commission’s efforts to ensure broad access to the process, stating that measures had been taken to prevent any eligible voter from being disenfranchised.

He further appealed for calm and orderly conduct throughout the day, calling on citizens to uphold the country’s democratic traditions.

“Let us make this a day defined by peace, respect and unity,” he said, urging voters to honor the process, follow the rules, and support election officials.

Thomas also encouraged the public to accept the outcome of the vote once declared, describing this as a fundamental pillar of democracy.

“Let us also respect the outcome… that is the true strength of a democratic [process],” he said.

His remarks come as voters across the country cast ballots to determine the next government, with authorities emphasizing that peaceful participation will be key to ensuring a credible election.
