Governor-General Sir Rodney Williams has cautioned that “the expectations… are high” following the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s landslide election victory, as Prime Minister Gaston Browne and Attorney General Steadroy Cutie Benjamin were sworn into office on Friday.

“The expectations, I must warn you, are high,” Williams said during the ceremony at Government House, noting that both leaders now assume office backed by a “renewed and powerful mandate.”

His remarks came just hours after polls closed in Thursday’s general election, which delivered a decisive outcome.

“Just a little over 12 hours ago, the polls closed, and the people… spoke with a clarity and resolve,” Williams said, describing the vote as a peaceful exercise of democracy that produced a mandate “as historic as it is definitive.”

The Governor-General formally congratulated Browne and the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) on securing 15 of the 17 parliamentary seats, calling it a “resounding victory” and a “monumental moment” in the country’s history.

“By the will of the people, the Prime Minister-elect has achieved what no other political leader… has ever accomplished — securing a fourth consecutive term in office,” Williams said.

He described the achievement as an “unprecedented feat” and said it reflects the “enduring confidence” voters have placed in Browne’s leadership and vision.

“To lead a nation into a fourth term is a rare distinction that speaks to a deep and unbreakable bond between a leader and his people,” he said.

While acknowledging the scale of the victory, Williams emphasized that its significance lies not only in the numbers but in the responsibility it carries.

“While the numbers tell a story of a landslide triumph, the true weight of this victory lies in the responsibility that it carries,” he said.

He added that such a decisive result provides the government with the “stability and strength required to navigate the challenges of our time.”

The Governor-General also framed the swearing-in as a key constitutional moment, describing it as “the very pinnacle of all democratic traditions” and urging those present to recommit to national service.

“As we proceed… let us all rededicate ourselves to the service of Antigua and Barbuda,” he said, calling for leadership that balances the “energy of this victory” with humility.

Williams concluded by offering a blessing for the country’s leaders as they begin their new term.

“May God grant you the wisdom of Solomon and the strength of character to lead our nation to even greater heights,” he said.

The ceremony marked the formal start of a new administration following one of the most decisive election outcomes in Antigua and Barbuda’s recent history.
