The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has joined the growing chorus of tributes following the death of educator, counsellor and choir director Dr. Renee Smith.
In a statement issued Thursday through the Education Broadcasting Unit, the ministry described Dr. Smith as a “dedicated educator and nation builder whose impact touched countless lives.”
The ministry said it honoured her years of service, commitment to education and the lasting legacy she leaves behind.
An accompanying tribute highlighted Dr. Smith’s work as a school counsellor within the public education system, where she became known for her compassion and commitment to the emotional and academic well-being of students.
The statement also recognised her contribution to the arts and youth development through her long-standing role as director of the National Youth Choir.
“Dr. Smith played a pivotal role in nurturing talent and promoting cultural expression among our nation’s youths,” the tribute stated.
The ministry noted that Dr. Smith later continued her work in higher education at The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus, where she served as campus counsellor and choir coordinator.
“Today, we honor and salute Dr. Smith for her invaluable years of service to our nation and for the lasting impact she made on the lives of so many,” the statement said.
The ministry extended condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and all those mourning her passing.
Dr. Smith was 48.
