Construction of a new cargo port in Barbuda is expected to begin within the next 60 days, with equipment set to be mobilized to the island shortly, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said Saturday.

Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show , Browne said the long-planned project will improve the movement of goods to and from Barbuda while supporting the island’s growing economy.

“We’ll be mobilizing equipment within the next 60 days to start the cargo port in Barbuda,” Browne said.

He said the cargo port forms part of a wider programme of infrastructure investment on the sister island, alongside road upgrades, housing developments and improvements at the airport.

“The roads are moving well. The airport is moving well,” Browne said, adding that work is also progressing on the terminal building.

Browne said the government is continuing to invest in infrastructure to support Barbuda’s long-term development and accommodate increased economic activity.

The prime minister also pointed to ongoing housing initiatives on the island, including homes being constructed with funding provided through a grant from China.

He said the combined investments are intended to improve transportation, expand housing and strengthen Barbuda’s capacity to support future residential and commercial growth.
