Health Minister Michael Joseph will travel to China in the coming days as the government pursues a partnership aimed at providing vision screening for more than 80 percent of Antigua and Barbuda’s population before the end of the year through the use of artificial intelligence-powered technology.

The initiative was announced Thursday by Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant during the weekly post-Cabinet media briefing as part of a broader programme to modernize healthcare services at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.

Merchant said Joseph will meet with HE Vision Group , an internationally recognized leader in digital ophthalmology and artificial intelligence-driven vision screening technology, to explore a long-term partnership that could significantly expand eye care services across the country.

According to Merchant, the minister’s visit will include discussions on acquiring three specialized AI-powered vision screening systems designed to improve the early detection of eye diseases and expand access to diagnostic services.

The proposed equipment includes intelligent non-mydriatic retinal imaging systems capable of detecting a wide range of eye conditions, portable artificial intelligence vision screening devices that can be used in schools and communities, and digital ophthalmology platforms that facilitate rapid diagnosis, data management and specialist consultations.

Merchant said Joseph will also visit the company’s affiliated university and teaching hospital to examine best practices in ophthalmic care, medical training and technological integration.

He said the government hopes the visit will lay the foundation for a long-term collaboration that strengthens Antigua and Barbuda’s eye care services through modern technology and specialized expertise.

Cabinet was told the proposed screening programme has the potential to allow more than 80 percent of the country’s population to undergo vision screening before the end of 2026.

Merchant said the initiative is expected to improve the early detection of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, refractive errors, amblyopia and other preventable causes of vision impairment.

The programme is expected to place particular emphasis on schoolchildren, senior citizens and people living with chronic diseases, groups considered to be at higher risk of vision problems.

Merchant said Cabinet welcomed the proposal, describing it as another step in the government’s broader strategy to modernize the country’s healthcare system through investment in technology, digital innovation, infrastructure and specialized clinical services.

He added that Cabinet reaffirmed improving access to high-quality healthcare remains one of the administration’s highest priorities and pledged continued support for initiatives designed to improve medical services throughout Antigua and Barbuda.
