The Booby Alley Redevelopment Project is in its final stages and is nearing its official opening, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said Sunday, describing the initiative as part of the government’s effort to improve housing and living conditions for residents.
Speaking on the Brown and Brown Show, Browne said work on the project is progressing steadily and that the development represents a significant transformation of one of the country’s long-standing informal settlements.
The comments came after host Colin O’Neill noted that fencing around portions of the site had been removed and that final preparations appeared to be underway for the inauguration.
Browne said the Booby Alley project complements the government’s broader housing agenda, which also includes the Housing Assistance Programme for Indigent People (HAPI) and affordable housing developments across Antigua and Barbuda.
He said the HAPI programme has expanded to the point where several homes are being completed each month, with the government targeting the construction of at least 50 homes annually for poor and indigent families.
The prime minister added that a new block plant is expected to be commissioned within the next 60 days, allowing the HAPI programme to transition from wooden houses to more durable concrete homes.
Browne said the government’s housing initiatives are aimed at improving the quality of life for vulnerable residents by replacing dilapidated structures with modern homes and expanding access to affordable housing throughout the country.
