Antigua and Barbuda’s athletes made a strong start at the NACAC Athletics Championships in Tlaxcala, Mexico, with Geolyna Dowdye, Dwayne Fleming and Tyra Fenton all advancing to finals in their respective events.

Dowdye qualified for the women’s Under-23 100 metres final after winning her semifinal in 11.54 seconds. She later placed fourth in the final with a time of 11.27 seconds.

In the men’s Under-23 100 metres, Dwayne Fleming advanced to the final after clocking 10.40 seconds to finish third in his heat. Kasiya Daley ran 10.62 seconds in Heat 1 but did not progress.

The Antigua and Barbuda Athletics Association said Fleming experienced discomfort midway through the final while leading the race at the 40-metre mark, affecting his chances of securing a medal.

Tyra Fenton booked her place in the girls’ Under-18 400 metres final after finishing third in Heat 1 in 56.27 seconds. The final is scheduled for Saturday.

Kettia Ambrose finished fifth in Heat 2 of the women’s Under-23 400 metres in 55.69 seconds and did not advance.

Competition continues with Fenton contesting the 400-metre final, while Dowdye, Fenton and Daley are set to compete in the 200-metre heats. Craig Prendergast will also compete in the men’s Under-23 400-metre hurdles final.

The Antigua and Barbuda Athletics Association wished Fleming a speedy recovery and extended its support to the national team as the championships continue.
