The National Hurricane Center is monitoring two tropical waves across the Atlantic, with forecasters indicating that both could see some development during the coming week.

As of 2 p.m. EDT Saturday, Aug. 8, one tropical wave over the central tropical Atlantic had a near-zero chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within 48 hours and a 20% chance of formation over the next seven days.

Forecasters said some gradual development of the system is possible during the early to middle part of the coming week.

A second tropical wave over the eastern and central tropical Atlantic is also being monitored. That system has a near-zero chance of formation during the next 48 hours, but its seven-day development probability has increased to 30%.

Some development of the second system is possible by the middle to latter part of next week.

Neither tropical wave is expected to develop immediately, but the systems are being watched as they move across the tropical Atlantic during the heart of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.

August typically marks the beginning of a significant increase in tropical activity across the Atlantic, with the climatological peak of the hurricane season occurring in September.

Residents of Antigua and Barbuda and elsewhere in the Lesser Antilles are encouraged to continue monitoring official forecasts and updates from the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service as the systems progress across the Atlantic.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30.
