The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus has welcomed its first cohort of Bachelor of Laws (LLB) students, marking a major milestone in the institution’s development.

Classes for the pioneering group officially began this week as the campus opened Semester I of the 2026/2027 academic year. UWI’s academic calendar lists September 1 as the start of teaching.

In announcing the milestone, the Five Islands Campus said the new students include individuals from Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica and St. Kitts and Nevis.

The university described the launch as “the beginning of a legacy,” saying the students are embarking on studies in law and legal systems that will prepare them for careers in justice, advocacy and other areas of the profession.

The inaugural class is expected to graduate in 2029.

The introduction of the LLB programme represents a significant expansion of academic offerings at the Antigua-based campus. The programme had been scheduled to begin in September 2026, allowing students to undertake their legal studies at Five Islands rather than relocating to another UWI campus.

Under the arrangement previously announced, the programme is academically linked to UWI Mona, which provides curriculum oversight, quality assurance and academic governance, while Five Islands manages its day-to-day delivery.
