Police in Antigua and Barbuda have recovered 45 firearms and 351 rounds of ammunition so far this year as authorities intensify efforts to combat violent crime.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Lisbon Michael disclosed the figures Saturday during an appearance on the Browne and Browne Show on Pointe FM.

Michael said six firearms and one modified flare gun have been seized since Operation Restore Confidence began on August 15. Police also recovered 43 rounds of ammunition during the operation, bringing the total for the year to 351.

During the first week of the operation, police arrested and charged 22 people in connection with serious offences, including robberies and break-ins.

Michael commended the officers involved in the initiative, describing the seizures and arrests as significant accomplishments. He said the operation was developed using information collected during police town hall meetings in several communities.

Police have also apprehended people wanted for murder in other jurisdictions and returned them to their respective countries, Michael disclosed.
