Antigua and Barbuda recorded 1,306 traffic collisions during the first half of 2026, with police warning that the figure remains alarmingly high despite a marginal year-on-year decline.

Superintendent Elson Quammie said the total fell by only 20 compared with the 1,326 crashes reported from January to June 2025.

Although he welcomed the reduction, Quammie said more than 1,300 collisions within six months is unacceptable for a country of Antigua and Barbuda’s size.

Four people died on the nation’s roads during the period, matching the death toll recorded in the first half of last year.

Quammie identified tailgating as a persistent problem, noting that many rear-end collisions occur because drivers fail to leave enough space between vehicles.

Speeding, mobile phone use, distraction, failure to yield and motorists entering main roads without properly checking for approaching traffic were also cited as common causes.

He urged drivers to slow down, exercise patience and ensure their licences, insurance and other documents remain valid.

Quammie also expressed concern about road safety in Barbuda, where continued economic and physical development has brought an increase in cars and heavy-duty vehicles.

He said the island will increasingly require stronger traffic enforcement, appropriate road signs and other safety measures already used in Antigua.

Despite operating with limited resources, Quammie said police remain committed to reducing collisions and preventing further deaths on the country’s roads.
