More than 2,500 students across 24 schools have undergone vision checks as part of a Ministry of Health programme aimed at detecting eye problems early.

The initiative, conducted with Trinidad Eye Hospital, had screened about 2,567 students by September 23. Around 11 per cent were flagged for additional optometric or refraction assessments.

Screenings have identified issues including short-sightedness, astigmatism, eye misalignment and dry eye. A small number of children also require further checks for possible conditions affecting the optic disc or macula, including suspected paediatric glaucoma.

The ministry said screening results are not diagnoses and stressed that children identified for follow-up will receive further assessment to determine whether treatment is needed.

Health Minister Michael Joseph said early detection can help address vision problems before they interfere with children’s learning and participation at school.

Screenings will continue at several schools through September 30, with parents and guardians urged to ensure children participate and complete any recommended follow-up.
