Kenyatta Benjamin of Hatton will spend 16 months behind bars for the 2022 road crash that left four cyclists injured, including national cyclist Andre Simon, who later died.

Benjamin was sentenced in the High Court on Monday after pleading guilty to dangerous driving. His driver’s licence was also suspended for four years.

The offence carries a maximum prison term of two years.

The case stemmed from a Mother’s Day collision in May 2022 on Sir George Walter Highway. Simon was training with cyclists Sean Weathered, Ghere Coates and Tiziano Rosignoli when they were struck by the vehicle Benjamin was driving.

All four men required hospital treatment. Weathered, Coates and Rosignoli were eventually discharged, while Simon remained critically injured.

Simon, a 36-year-old father of one, suffered severe head injuries and internal bleeding and spent an extended period in the Intensive Care Unit at Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.

On July 2, 2022, nearly two months after the crash, he was transferred to TIRR Memorial Hospital in Texas for further medical treatment while in a wakefulness coma.

Simon remained in the United States for treatment but died about 13 months after the collision.

Benjamin did not face a charge of causing death by dangerous driving because Simon’s death occurred outside the period prescribed
