Hotelier Andrew Michelin took a hands-on approach to recruitment this week, personally joining his management team at the Antigua and Barbuda Hotels and Tourism Association’s (ABHTA) Hospitality Job Fair as his hotel group searched for new talent to join its growing hospitality operations.

While participating properties were represented by members of their management and human-resource teams, Michelin’s decision to attend personally placed him among the hotel owners taking a direct interest in meeting prospective employees and learning more about the people seeking opportunities within the industry.

Michelin spent time with members of his management team and engaged directly with applicants as they explored employment opportunities across the group’s operations.

The Andrew Michelin Hotels portfolio includes COCOS Hotel and Keyonna Beach, while the group also operates Conch Beach Cabins and manages and markets Hawksbill Resort.

For Michelin, the recruitment exercise is also about finding individuals who can contribute to the distinctive experience his properties seek to provide guests.

While a degree can be an asset, the focus extends beyond academic qualifications.

According to Operations and Guest Manager at Keyonna Beach, Inger Challenger, Character, willingness to learn, drive, customer service and commitment are among the qualities being sought by the group.

Michelin is encouraging persons who believe they have what it takes to succeed in the hospitality industry to apply.

The job fair forms part of the industry’s ongoing efforts to connect employers with Antiguans and other residents seeking opportunities in tourism and hospitality, one of the country’s major employment-generating sectors.

ABHTA head Patrice Simon highlighted the importance of the initiative, noting the broad participation from businesses and organisations seeking to identify prospective employees.

Simon said initiatives such as the Hospitality Job Fair are important in helping to bridge the gap between employers seeking qualified and motivated workers and individuals looking for opportunities to enter or advance within the industry.

For Michelin, finding the right people is therefore not simply about filling vacancies.

It is about identifying individuals who have the attitude, personality and willingness to grow within the industry and then investing in them.

The job fair provided an opportunity for prospective employees to present their qualifications and experience, but Michelin’s presence also allowed him to get a sense of the people behind the applications.
